QUIZ – Combine settings

September 23, 2026

Three questions with tips and links to adjust combine settings for tough evening threshing, to reduce grain loss and manage residue.

1. The Combine Optimization Tool at canolacalculator.ca walks you through adjustments to fix harvest problems – including grain loss, grain sample quality and productivity. The tool notes, "A grain sample that _______ is usually associated with high grain loss and/or low productivity." (Fill in the blank.)

has high dockage

is too clean

has a lot of broken seeds

includes unthreshed pods

2. Combine settings for a warm, sunny afternoon may not be ideal for a cool, dewy evening. In a Canola Digest article, Marcel Kringe says the increase in canola seed loss out the back of the combine as conditions change throughout the day can ___________. (Fill in the blank.)

surprise you

be ignored

make it not worthwhile to combine at night

easily be two to three bushels per acre

3. Leaving longer stubble (and putting less material through the combine) is one way to improve residue spread and improve combine productivity. What is the general rule on stubble height?

Cut at a height equal to or less than the seeding tool’s row spacing

Half the residue as stubble, half through the combine

Adjust height based on harvest conditions

Let the harrows take care of the residue
