QUIZ – Spraying weather

Jay Whetter

Wind and temperature often influence pesticide application and results. These three questions provide useful reminders about spraying weather.

1. Sprayers 101 has a new article with tips for spraying in the wind. What is the Sprayers 101 recommended boom height for windy conditions?
2. Hot temperatures can reduce herbicide efficacy. At what temperature threshold does a Manitoba Agriculture factsheet suggest you “shut off the sprayer”?
3. Hot temperatures also influence performance for some common insecticides. Even though some insects thrive in the heat, products to control them may not. Pyrethroids (including deltamethrin and permethrin) perform better at temperatures below 25°C. Some companies specify this in product recommendations. Research (Harris and Kinoshita, 1977) showed that permethrin on flea beetles was ________ potent at 15°C than it was at 32°C. (Fill in the blank.)
